We got our first Border Terrier in 1989 and followed soon with another – both from the kennel of Robin Young of Deswind Border Terriers. We were looking for a “big” dog in a little package and found it in these delightful little dogs. We have dabbled in obedience and earthdog festivities in addition to showing in conformation.
For your consideration: Be prepared for dogs that are very “licky”. If you are disgusted with dog kisses, the Border Terrier is NOT for you. Border terriers are not for people who want a dog just SOME of the time. They are extremely family-oriented and great “bed dogs”. If left alone, they can be destructive, are avid diggers, can climb fences and disappear after varmints. They can injure or kill cats if the cats were not there first. Raised with cats, a border is generally just fine. Borders are active without being hyper, are good sentries, hardy but sensitive and excellent family members. They do need some grooming and exercise. Within these web pages are some photos of borders that are in “long coat”, or in other words, unstripped.
