THE SAINT BERNARDS

Keepsake Saint Bernards began in 1988 when we brought home our first Saint, a 3 year old male, named Cache Retreat Barnaby. We enthusiastically jumped into dog showing and "Barney" earned titles in AKC conformation, obedience, good citizenship and SBCA drafting. In 1989, we brought home our foundation bitch, 2 year old Cache Retreat Up Tempo "Tempo" where she earned her AKC championship, an obedience title and a drafting title as well. Through the years we added 2 more foundation bitches to the clan and showed them to their AKC championships, Ch. Cache Retreat Silver Lining and Ch. Cache Retreat Symmetry. With this stock came three of the most important aspects of being a St. Bernard: a beautiful head, a sound body and the very important, sweet temperament. At Keepsake, we strive to continue with those aspects by carefully planned breedings, x-raying our breeding stock at two years of age and providing socialized, vaccinated and healthy puppies when they leave our home.

Our dogs are AKC registered and shown regularly in conformation and obedience. We also participate in other working dog activities such as carting, parade walking, weight pulling and Canine Good Citizen Tests. In addition to holding AKC Championship and Obedience titles, our saints hold St. Bernard Club of America Working Dog titles in Drafting.

If you are interested in purchasing a puppy from us, you will be given an interview. People that have done some “homework” (i.e., know what kinds of questions to ask us, read books on St. Bernards, previously owned a Saint, and/or have gone to dog shows to see Saints) will be given the highest priority. Seeing the Beethoven movies does not count toward knowledge about St. Bernards.

The St. Bernard is not for everyone! These dogs are very social and loyal (as are all dogs) and (1) must be included as one of your family. They do not respond well to neglect and being ignored in the backyard. (2) No matter how cute and fluffy a Saint puppy is, expect it to grow well over 120 pounds. You have to feed it, house-train it, leash-train it and provide a fenced area to run in. (3) Saints are good with children providing the puppy and the children are properly trained and supervised! If you are not prepared for any of these “bernardisms” (or your family is not prepared) then you do not need a Saint!
